It is time to look at the status in the blogosphere. I am a blogger and I read pretty many blogs every single day. There are zillions of various blogs in the Internet, but not too many ski blogs. Ok, not exactly. There are hundreds of ski blogs, but most of them are either dead or MFA (Made For AdSense) sites. In this article I provide you a list of top three skiing blogs in the blogosphere. After that you have no need to search anymore, you just got the links to the best blogs, right?
In order to review the ski blogs, let’s define some kind of criteria for a good blog. Because this is not a research, we are satisfied with these simple rules listed below. For a blog being a top ski blog, it must
1. provide readers valuable articles
2. be live and regularly updated
3. be of high quality design and usability
I concentrate in finding live and regularly updated ski blogs that provide readers valuable and interesting articles, and which are high quality blogs from usability and design point of view. With valuable articles I mean those like Janne’s article on skiing in Slovakia. There are of course other ways to review ski blogs, and this type of review could be much more detailed, but this time I provide you a “quick review”. May be a deeper research later on.
Homeboy is certainly the number one skiing blog, but I will not take our own blog into account..
Top 3 Ski Blogs: Skiing Blog #1 – Big Lines
Big Lines is actually more like a website than just a ski blog, but because it is built on top of blog content management system, I consider it as a blog. Big Lines is a fantastic source of skiing information, fabulous pictures and videos. It has a design that rocks and it is pretty well structured to provide high usability. It is not updated regularly, but there are not big gaps between the posts, so new articles appear few times a week. Big Lines provides also gear reviews, news, conditions and event information. There is even a pretty active discussion forum. All in all, Big Lines is my number one blog, even though it is more than just a ski blog.
Top 3 Ski Blogs: Skiing Blog #2 – Lou Dawson’s WildSnow
When it comes to backcountry skiing blogging and information, Lou Dawson’s WildSnow rocks! It is a huge archive of very valuable backcountry skiing information. Lou is specialized in freeskiing gear reviews and he seems to update the blog in regular basis. I almost ranked WildSnow as number one skiing blog, but Lou’s blog suffers from design. There are plenty of blog themes available, and if I was Lou I would change the theme to something more unique design. Anyhow, Lou’s WildSnow skiing blog is just a fantastic freeskiing blog with active editing and good number of readers.
Top 3 Ski Blogs: Skiing Blog #3 – Dave’s Backcountry Skiing Blog
Man, this one I love. Dave’s backcountry skiing blog with BIG pictures. I love Dave’s pictures! They are just stunning. I mean, just look at the this article. Isn’t it just great? As the name says, Dave’s backcountry skiing blog provides real stories of backcountry skiing. Dave seems to be a helluva good freeskier and he goes directly to the top notch places. Man, I wish I could join Dave skiing those steep mountain faces.. Dave’s blog provides very interesting articles on backcountry skiing, but his blog suffers from usability and the narrow scope (just backcountry skiing) and it is not too often updated. These constraints drop Dave’s blog to position three.
[UPDATE 2011] Dave’s Backcountry skiing blog seems to be gone, so I removed the link
What do you think? What is your favorite ski blog?

Thanks for your comment Idetrorce. Which blogs you like?
I think that http://www.skiingthebackcountry.com has a lot of great articles and photos. They have several different contributors, so you get to see what’s going on elsewhere.
Hey kris clug, thanks for the link. Looks good in that site. It also seems to be more than a blog, but anyhow, it looks interesting.
I think what the best blog is, is very subjective. It depends a lot on what the reading is trying to get out of the blog: trying to learn how to ski, are they already an expert and want to share their experience, want to learn about the newest ski equipment, etc..

I very much like your view on the top ski blogs. This blog fits in nicely with a project that I am currently working on whereby I am trying to describe and provide information about the top 10 ski resorts in Europe.
I am currently creating a skiing website that makes people aware of the top 10 ski resorts in Europe. I would appreciate if people could have a look at my website and provide any feedback about how I could improve it. Thanks.

Have been checking Blogs about Skiing In Canada, Skiing in British Columbia and Skiing the Canadian Rockies and visited Powder Matt’s Blog as Fernie Alpine Resort is in the Canadian Rockies just north of where I live in Montana. This Ski Blog has good information and great pictures and good stories about skiing in Canada. We are going to check out the resorts in this region of British Columbia this winter- a positive site for sure http://www.skircr.com/matts-blog
Thanks for the tip and link skipro8!
Good Morning, The reason why im writting a message here is because i wish to know the difference between two pairs of Ski-boots. Im Between the Nordica Beast 8 and Nordica SportMachine 8, i love going fast and i consider myself almost an advance skier….. any comments?
Thank You
Dapkoner, sorry but we haven’t tested those boots yet, but we write this to our “to-do” list. May be we’ll get a chance to test them and give you our thoughts.
http://www.Newschoolers.com is probably the biggest ski “blog” on the planet, with http://www.skipass.com/ either giving it a run for its money or maybe even beating it (but it’s french). http://www.Biglines.com is definitely a strong contender. The Teton Gravity site is a very helpful site, particularly in the forums. In my opinion, http://www.Freeskier.com is leading the way for online ski magazine sites. They “get” the online publishing game.
From the looks of it, Powder_dan and Skipro8 might be spammers? They may be right in saying Fernie has some of the best powder in B.C. but c’mon people, the spam is pretty transparent. You’ve even attempted to use SEO to pump up the first one. Tsk tsk.
This is how you spam about Fernie. My experiences with the best powder town in B.C.: http://mikeberard.com/blog/?p=1393
Hi Marko,
Very interesting article and I like your recommendations, but your site is excellent.
My ski blog, http://banskoblog.com (Bansko, Bulgaria) will look better in about a week once its had a redesign, nice banner picture etc… but i like to think the site has grown simply down to the content. I try and make it personal and avoid BS.
My actual ski content will be improved with both mine other contributors focussing more on the sking as well as life (wine, fashion, language!) in Bulgaria.
cheers, Lance
Thanks Lance! I appreciate your feedback. You too have a good start with your ski blog. I wish you luck and patience, as building a ski blog really takes some time
These three blogs helped me a lot. Thanks for sharing the information.

Ready for the upcoming 2011-2012 ski season.
I love skiing since i was a child, and my love for this sport has never been changed. I’d mention this quote which has inspired me a lot:
“Skiing is the pleasurable part of alpinism – way more pleasurable and fun than alpine climbing.”
These blogs are a great selection. I have been reading ‘biglines’ for a long time and always find it full of great information. I feel however that your own blog should be included in the list….

Hey Marko…
I invented a unique product 30 years ago which had special elements included for enhancing skiers enjoyment. I marketed it briefly at retail but then withdrew it from the marketplace to focus on 2 other businesses that I started at the same time. I sold hundreds through ski pro friends which in THAT era was the best way to get “word of mouth” sales.
I have just reintroduced the item to the market, and as a total novice in “social media” , I was hoping that I could get to talk to you on the phone about it and hear YOUR reaction to its viability and perhaps some advice on how to best get the word out..
I am at 203-329-0317…and would appreciate a call or a reply as to how I can TALK to you. Thanks Mark Kaufman
