Few days I ago I scrolled through the visitors of our blog (btw. thank you ALL for visiting our site!) and found this one:

http://blog.thomaslaupstad.com/

It is the blog of a Norwegian photographer, Thomas Laupstad. The pics on the site are mainly about nature. Thomas explains that one of his main interest is preserving nature (thus the obvious pick of subject!).

Well, Northern Norway is all about fjords and fjells (bays and mountains). No wonder pictures in the blog will speak to a skier as well. Maybe even more to a skier that is somehow environmentally conscious. And not to mention the ones that just like stunning pictures of the great northern nature…

See what I mean e.g. here:

Midnight sun photos (That is a thing we scandis love for sure!)

Search the archives (e.g. mountain photos ) and I’ll bet you find some skiable looking stuff or just otherwise beautiful mountain images…be warned: a great way of killing time at the office!

Northern Norway (and Norway in general) is one of my favourite place for skiing. Although you could only find one Norwegian resort in our list of top-ten ski resorts (of both that we have visited and liked to visit). You see, those lists were all about resorts. And although Norway has some good resorts, its real strenght is the ski touring in untouched nature, with some of the most beautiful views in the world (in our opinion).

Midnight Pow riding in Anderdaltinden, Lyngen, Norway

I’ve made two great touring trips to Norway: once in Lyngen peninsula up north and once in Jotunheim National park , skiing the Hurrungane mountain range with Marko. Both trips offered some great, albeit very variable, skiing (an lots of uphill stuff too, naturally) but for me those trips still offered alot more as a whole experince; the nature, the views, the friends, the peacefulness and harmony of the fjells, and also the sudden and powerfull changes of the weather and ski conditions…

And don’t get me wrong - the skiing in Northern Norway can be up to AK level, or so I’ve heard at least from skiers that have experinced the both! (The weather is as unpredictable too, like it or not). It is maybe a very little known fact that all the tough Finnish skiers from Northern Finland (and some from southern too) have logged serious descents up there for years. Some of the bigger US film companies have also filmed a few nice parts in Norway, having that special permission for heli accessed goods. If you didn’t know, for us more mortals, it is all hike or don’t ski at all in the backcountry. And actually, I find it only very good - it is just part of the experince. And after all, nothing beats turns after you have earned them for some six-seven hours…you just have to get that right touring mindset on!

Fjords and mountains, what could be better?

I put some of my (or actually friend’s by permission) Norway pictures here too. Marko also has some great old photos from the said Hurrungane trip (from way back, 1999!) that we should scan sometimes and publish! Stay tuned…another project for us is to scan all the best old slides and paper photos.
