80’s Skiing Video From Antarctica

20 April 2008 2 Comments

Oh boy! I came a cross with this video this weekend and I must say it brings me some good memories from the 80’s. Typical clothing of 80’s and jumping style in skiing.. combined with Van Halen’s Jump that one of the cornerstones of 80’s music. Sounds good! Check out the video below.

Although skiing in this video looks funny, surrounding mountains are absolutely beautiful. As you can guess, I have never been to Antarctica, but I really would like to go. Snow condition in this video looks just perfect and those guys seem to be alone. Totally different from heavily crowded European ski resorts. Antarctica seems to be kind of a skiing paradise. No tourists, no hassle, no after-ski. Just powder skiing 24/7.

It is interesting to see how skiing has developed from the 80’s. Although these guys ski more with 90’s style, you can see how different skiing looks today as carving was invented. Just like skiing has developed, also clothing style has changed a lot. Again, these guys are wearing clothing designed for backcountry skiing which is different from the clothing most people used in the 80’s. Anyhow, clothing looks different today.

One thing in this video is typical 80’s for sure. It is the group skiing in the end of the video. If you watch 80’s ski movies you can see people skiing in groups and making symmetric tracks. Thanks God, that has also dissappeared..

    Great stuff.

I actually enjoy quite alot watching those 80’s/early 90’s clips - although the skiing isn’t as fluid as today, you can see those guys being very dynamic and control their 210’s VERY well. I bet 90% of today’s skiers would be in huge trouble in any kind of deep snow with those planks! That required some serious skills!

And hey, don’t diss the group skiing…occasionally that still has its time and place :)

Oh yes, I was not that serious with group skiing ;)
