Northern Norway - Winter Isn’t Over Yet (+ links to some interesting ski & snowboard communities and blogs)

Late spring skiing in Tamokdalen, Norway

This photo was taken on the 21th of May (yesterday!) in Tamokdalen, Norway. (Source: http://www.relaa.com , Photo: Aadne Olsrud)

In my latest post I was kind lamenting the summer skiing in Norway, or actually Europe in general. I didn’t express myself clearly…as the border of winter/spring/summer is sometimes quite shady. People ski e.g. in Chamonix all the steepest lines mostly in spring and early summer, from the beginning of May to the early June. sometimes even to the late June/early July. The conditions above ~3500 meters are often pure ice in the wintertime and only spring conditions make the snow skiable up high.

In Norway then, if you go far enough to the northernmost part of the country, it is pretty hard to say when the winter ends…it is not uncommon to ski fresh powder in late May / early June. (At least for those few living /exploring the region. Note also that this is all pure backcountry, you must be willing to hike to get the goods…).

Lots can be said about social media (Facebook especially) but sometimes that stuff can bring some good information, contacts and all kinds of other interesting information:

If you are interested on skiing in northern Norway and have a facebook account (who hasn’t these days?), check out these groups:

LyngenAlp - The Artic Alps in northern Norway

Tamok Friends

You can e.g. find information about the Lyngen guides from the groups and lots of nice pics and videos of course.

Especially the Tamok group is interesting - as this location is gaining the reputation as the new hot spot. Tamok is located a bit more inland, so the snow stays drier longer. The ascents also start right from the road, meaning you hike for the vertical meters (no long approach walks).

The first video of the group is very cool, a sample of the upcoming Finnish snowboard movie, The Scrapbook Project. As our snowboarders simply kick ass, I bet the film can’t be bad! Oh, and they have a nice blog too…althought the latest updatest are a bit old (the guys are enjoying a well earned summer holiday at the moment but check out the earlier posts for some good snowboard action!)

Here the mentioned video for you to see. Nice, eh? And there is still some to be had, believe or not!

Other videos from The Scrapbook Project can be found here.

PS. I you wan’t to go there but are not willing to hike, these guys can get you the heli access..although this happens in the Swedish side of the border as the heliskiing is denied by the law in Norway (which is a good thing IMHO, after all). Anyway, there are some nice lines in the Swedish side too. Btw. Those guys are very recommended and very professional.

PPS. Don’t forget to check this cool blog about northern Norway, and our earlier article of some nice ski communities and/or blogs…
