Skiing tips and articles from experienced and enthusiastic skiers

How about Windsurfing this time!

Nop, we are not all gone..Here I am again to write about alternative sports for the summer season, for those of you that sadly are packing your ski equipment and left to wait patiently for next season!

In my previous article I wrote about mountain biking in Rhodos Island (Greece). And I mentioned that I was waiting for Aeolus, the god of wind, to blow his fiercing winds over the Aegean Sea. Well, I can now say that windsurfing season has started for good, even though I personally didn’t stop surfing during winter when I had the chance.  However, planing full speed over choppy waters, while wearing only your harness is somewhat different! During summer air temperature stays over 28 degrees Celsius, while water temperature is around 27 degrees. Sometimes when surfing just before then sunset it is warm to be in the water, than on the board!

I mainly surf at Ialisos Beach on the west (windy) coast of Rhodos Island, and the last few weeks we had some really windy days, so this could only please the surfers that have arrived from abroad to the island. I really hope this season we have really good windy days. You know windsurfing is pretty much similar to skiing when it comes to weather conditions. You can only surf when it’s windy….the rest of the time you are just waiting!

So if you are thinking of visiting Rhodos for windsurfing you should know some things about the surfing conditions. Ialisos is located on the west coast of the island of Rhodos and its is known for the constant wind that builds up during the day, providing suitable conditions for all levels. Usually calm sea and light winds in the morning for intermediates, progressing to a small chop (up to 1 meter) and stronger winds in the afternoon for the advanced and expert windsurfers. Jumping can be fun and challenging further out, while free-styling or free-riding is a must! The wind blows side-shore from the left and the famous Greek Meltemi during late July and early August makes windsurfing literally a daily routine.

Along the beach, there many windsurfing schools, offering the latest and finest equipment from all windsurfing brands.  As well as windsurfing courses for the ones that are willing to give it a go and become addicted as most of us!

So if you are thinking how to keep your adrenaline levels high during summer, I recommend you try riding some waves. I will be adding more articles concerning equipment, free- style moves and windsurfing events, so stay tuned. In the meanwhile why not plan your next holiday somewhere where Aeolus makes frequent visits.
