SUP - Stand Up Paddleboarding

25 August 2008 No Comment

While anxiously waiting for the new mountain biking test rides we have ahead I remembered this thing…

(And yes, wait a few days and I got another nice bike to test. I just got to make some schedule arrangements)

Well, I read about this SUP thing in Swedish Brant Magazine a while ago and it immediately got my attention. Originally this is an ancient Hawaiian way of catching waves but it has remained very unknown / unpopular until lately (although the Brant’s article states that the “re-birth” of the discipline already started as early as in the 1930’s!).

We are no “real” surfers here (I’ve surfed, a longboard, for about 14 days in my whole life) and surfing in the Baltic Sea basically sucks. But this method probably would help riding the mushy waves we got here alot. Also, if the climate change continue increase the winds (like it already feels) here, we might get to surf those mushy waves so often, it actually starts sounding at least somehow appealing?

Paddling out with these boards looks kind of funny but I guess this would be a great whole body workout for skiing, even when the waves are not that good? Marko is also an avid (kayak) paddler and I am pretty sure he would dig this sport that combines surfing and paddling so well!

Check out these videos. I would like to try out this stuff for sure.
