I had the opportunity to spend a season in Innsbruck, Austria to ski everyday and have a great year. After some time getting to know many of the mountains on my 30 mountain regional tirol pass that were close by, Axamer Lizum became my "home mountain". As a freeskier (or boarder) this is a hot spot for many young locals looking for great powder and lift accessible (moderate hikes and traversing sometimes required) side country. Bus is free from the city if you have skis and the snow can be great in the morning AND in the afternoon. THe piste is also well kept and speedy for some good cruising (especially womens downhill).

Outside of axamer, we would frequent STubaier GLacier on the weekends (catch the free hotel buses posing as a tourist to go out ther). Beautiful place, but watch for high winds. It can get brutal up top even though its not bad down below, or sometimes if its really overcast, stubaier is high enough to sit above the weather and you can get some sun over the clouds =). some steep terrain here if you feel adventurous and bold.

Kuhtai!! Always worth going to if you can catch the buses for that. really high mountain so it is wide open. well developed resort too.

Definitely hit up Nordkette cuz Hafelekar is just aweeesome. Wednesdays were discount student days. just watch out for the wind/clouds cuz visibility can go kill your day if you don't track the weather and the valley.

seegrub. then start exploring. i went to a lot of mountains for only 1 or 2 days because i was mostly stuck to the bus system, but had some of the best days without even knowing those mountains very well.

<3 axamer. can't wait to get back.

cheers

[...] Tirol Snow Card might set a new record for the amount of lifts and piste kilometers ever offered on one season pass. With it you can use 938 different lifts to ski down 3600 piste kilometers in 77 different resorts, including four glacier resorts in Tyrol. The card is valid in nearly all of the Tyrolean ski areas, some of the most well known ones being Mayrhofen, Zillertal, Hintertux Glacier, Kitzbühel, Fieberbrunn, Obergurgl-Hochgurgl, Pitztal Glacier, Stubai Glacier and Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis. The resorts near Innsbruck are also covered by the pass. (Check out Ville’s great article on them here.) [...]
