ColdAvenger Keeps Skiers Breathing Easy

When surfing the Internet we sometimes discover pretty weird stuff such as Twin Parabolic Ski, Cheetah Ultra Sports Whip-117 Snowboard or the Ski Home Simulator. At first ColdAvenger looks like “yet another cool ski gadget” but in fact it seems to be useful.

ColdAvenger looks like some kind of a Star Wars thingy, but in fact it is a winter mask that makes use of a special breathing valve that mixes the cold outdoor air with your warm breath while still keeping your face dry. Didn’t get it? ColdAvenger traps moisture and creates an air chamber while you breath. By this it also keeps your face dry.

The company behind the mask is Talus Outdoor, and they claim that ColdAvenger can make even -20° weather feel comfortable. How about -35° which is pretty common up here in north? Not even talking about Verkhoyansk in Siberia where the average yearly temperature is -50 °C. The coldest temperature measured in Verkhoyansk is -69,8 °C while during the “hottest” day they have measured +37 °C. This makes the whopping difference of 105 °C. I guess even ColdAvenger doesn’t work in such hostile environment.

Anyhow, ColdAvenger is an interesting innovation because it can be helpful at least for people working and living in cold environment. See what the company says:

“ColdAvenger mixes inhaled cold air with exhaled warm air to achieve a dynamic balance of warmth while keeping the face dry. Inside mask temperatures are 40º to 60ºF higher than outside, depending on activity. The patent-pending ventilation design allows for easy breathing during exertion, a critical feature for high endurance outdoor activities.  Moisture from exhaled air binds to the plastic piece, keeping the face dry.”

The ColdAvenger starts at $50.

  1. “Joonas lämpökenno” reinvented.
If You recall the Finnish thing that was made for asthmatic people, in order to make possible for them to take part in winter sports. Typically XC skiing, here in Finand.

  2. http://www.jonas.fi/en/

Apparently professor Antti Nurmesniemi edsigned the original thing in 80′s or so.
At least I saw some when I was a kid.

  3. very fine functionality and also logic very very ……. :)

  4. Oh, that was new to me. May be because I was not that much interested in XC skiing back in the 80s :)

They seem to have at least one patent in US (383,537), but I guess the product never took off. We Finns are not really good at marketing and selling in US (nothing new, btw.).

From design perspective ColdAvenger is clearly far ahead. See http://www.jonas.fi/tuotteet/

  5. Apparently there is competition in the field nowadays.
I saw an add on Facebook (!) of third similiar product. (Other than Jonas and ColdAvenger.)

And back in the day I actually saw the Jonas things on downhill skiing slope. You know I absolutely hate the Hemohes- a.k.a. XC skiing – evenmore so than the commies and enviromentalist party ;)

    And that’s a lot.

  6. Interesting details. Thanks Teuwo!

Funny but I don’t know anyone who would have been interested in XC skiing when we were teenagers, but nowadays I find it interesting. Yep, I’m getting old..
